What We're Building Here

A note from The Shortlist on why we exist, what we chose to build, and where this is going.

Here's what the local web looks like right now. Tourists arrive, search for something to do, and get the same twelve results that any tourist in any beach town gets. Residents live here for years and don't know the food truck parked four blocks away. HOAs send PDFs that nobody opens, answer the same questions in Facebook comments, and call it community. Small businesses pay a third of every order to platforms that don't know their names and wouldn't notice if they closed. The infrastructure exists — the phones, the addresses, the neighborhoods — but it doesn't actually know where it is. So we built something different.

We're two months in. Two partner communities live. A handful of businesses in the network. The first issue of this magazine, in your hands. That's the whole thing right now — and we're saying so plainly because loading position is worth being honest about.

Here's what we chose to build. Communities get communication infrastructure their residents actually need — free. Not a trial, not a freemium ladder. Free, because a community is the foundation of everything else, and charging for the foundation is how you get a platform nobody uses. Residents get one place where their HOA lives, their neighbors live, and the businesses they actually use live — all in a single feed. Businesses get reach without the extraction. We charge a flat rate. We don't take a cut of orders. A food truck owner keeping their margins matters more to us than a third party taking them.

And here's something that's already running, even if you haven't noticed it yet. If you live in a partner community, or you've ordered from a business in the network, you have a personal assistant here. It knows your HOA. It knows your favorites. It knows your neighbors. It's going to know more.

We're not going to walk you through what that means. Sit with it.

This is Issue 01. Year one. The magazine is new, the platform is new, and several of the things we want to build don't exist yet. We know that. What does exist: a growing network of businesses and communities that chose to be here early. Orders moving through. Events filling up. A magazine. That's not nothing. It's also not finished.
